Intalio|Works BAM

Intalio|Works BAM allows the creation of real-time process monitoring dashboards.

The purpose of Business Activity Monitor (BAM) is to provide real-time information about the status of processes, activities, and transactions, through the definition of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and the presentation of real-time dashboards. Intalio|Works BAM provides a powerful framework for the definition of KPIs and the instrumentation of processes at design time, the dynamic configuration of scalable data repositories at deployment time, the capture of events and metrics at runtime, and the presentation of dashboards in a real-time fashion [Screencast].

Intalio|Works BAM is based on the BIRT open source project from Eclipse.

From a design standpoint, Intalio|Works BAM is based on powerful Metrics Editor used to define Key Performance Indicators, a WYSIWYG Report Designer, and connectors to third-party systems in order to support the inclusion of external variables in composite metrics and KPIs. All components are tightly integrated into Intalio|Works Designer, while real-time dashboards can be served through Intalio|Works Portal or any web server, and static reports stored on Intalio|Works ECM.

Metrics Editor

The Metrics Editor enables the definition of process metrics and Key Performance Indicators, which can be defined from multiple process metrics combined through mathematical operations and bolean logic (using the graphical Data Mapper). Once defined, KPIs can be graphically added to the BPMN process map in order to define at which points in the process execution they should be captured for logging, reporting, and monitoring purposes.

Report Designer

The Report Designer is used to create both real-time dashboard and static reports that can be exported as Microsoft Word documents or PDF files. For creating a new report, a business analyst simply selects a data source (metric or KPI), and graphically links data source elements to tables or charts using the WYSIWYG Report Designer. Alternatively, Intalio|Works AJAX can be used for the development of more complex dashboards.

External Variables

Key Performance Indicators sometime require the inclusion of data elements managed by external systems of records. While the process might capture instances of such data elements at some point during its execution, such data elements might become outdated, leading to the computation of incorrect KPIs. In order to address this problem, Intalio|Works BAM supports the definition of external variables that are looked up on demand when presenting real-time dashboards.

Intalio|Works BAM provides a Report Viewer that integrates with Intalio|Works Portal and provides online access to real-time dashboards. During deployment, metrics are mapped to external metric sinks (data sources) that collect them. The mapping definition depends on the type of metric sink used, but typically includes:

  • Connection configuration (host, authentication, etc).
  • Table name, queue name, event sink name.
  • Optional mapping between value names and external representation (e.g. column names, XML structure).
  • Mapped properties.

Some properties are always available for mapping into the metric, and this mapping is done in the deployment configuration instead of the BAM activity. These properties include process name, process instance, date/time, and process owner. Typically, derived metrics are dumped as is, and aggregated afterwards. However, metrics can also be aggregated in real time, by configuring the database to include a collection configuration. The collection configuration will specify the keys used for grouping related records, and the manner in which other fields are aggregated (last value, sum, min, count, etc.).

Reports produced by Intalio|Works BAM are fetched directly from the BAM database, thereby creating no additional load for neither the process server nor the process database. This architecture also permits the deployment of Intalio|Works BAM on a separate server, alongside a separate BAM server, which is recommended for mission-critical environments. Users can also integrate third-party reporting tools that may enhance the visual representation of the information, such as Crystal Reports.
